TMT

WHAT IS TMT BAR?

TMT bars or Thermo-Mechanically Treated bars are high-strength reinforcement bars having a tough outer core and a soft inner core. The very first step of the manufacturing process involves passing the steel wires through a rolling mill stand. Thereafter, these rolled steel wires are again passed through the Tempcore water cooling system. While passing the wires through the water cooling system, the water pressure is optimised. The sudden quenching and drastic change in temperature toughen the outer layer of the steel bar, thus making it super tough and durable. Once this process is over, the TMT bars are subject to atmospheric cooling. This is done in order to equalise the temperature difference between the soft inner core and the tough exterior. Once the TMT bar cools down, it slowly turns into a ferrite-pearlite mass. The inner core remains soft giving the TMT bar great tensile strength and elongation point. This design is unique to the TMT bars and gives superior ductility to the bars. Also, this unique manufacturing technique and the absence of Cold stress make this bar corrosion-resistant and boost its weldability.

On the other hand, HYSD stands for High Yielding Strength Deformed bars. These bars have more yield strength than Mild Steel. Unlike TMT bars, HYSD bars are both hot or cold worked. The HYSD bars are treated at high temperatures and then rolled and twisted for shaping and hence it is also thermally + mechanically treated.

  • HYSD = Torsed/twisted steel (TOR Steel Bars)
  • HYSD = Cold Twisted Deformed Steel Bars (CTD Steel Bars)
  • HYSD = High Yield Strength Deformed Bars

ADVANTAGES OF TMT

  • Durability and Malleability

TMT bars are significantly advantageous because of their great ductility and flexibility properties. These properties assist in pre-welding the meshes in an industry which eliminates the necessity of manual binding. It also saves time in the fabrication of materials and construction.

  • Earthquake Resistance

Constructions collapse sometimes during earthquakes but TMT bars are highly resistant to earthquakes. Soft pearlite core of TMT bars can bear seismic and dynamic loading. So, TMT bears are comfortable to use in earthquake-prone areas to save the construction from collapsing and damage.

  • Great Bonding Strength

CTMT bars have superior bonding strength. This strength to the bars is provided by external ribs which run across the entire length of bars which advances high bonding strength between the concrete and the bar. This property is very advantageous in construction processes.

  • Cost-effective

As TMT bars have high tensile strength and very good elongation values, they give a great deal of savings and reduced transportation costs. So, TMT bars are cost-effective compared to other normal construction bars.

  • Resistance to Corrosion and Fire

When the TMT steel bars undergo Thermo Mechanical Treatment (TMT) process, they attain anti-corrosive properties and gain superior strength. The bars also undergo a process of the controlled water-cooling process which prevents the formation of coarse carbides which are the main causes of corrosion. TMT bars have high thermal stability unlike normal steel bars and CTD reinforcement bars.

  • Easy Working at Site

Physical properties of TMT bars increase work productivity at construction sites. It is comfortable and easy to work with these bars as they are extremely flexible and have ductility and malleability.

APPLICATIONS OF TMT

TMT steel bars have broad application in this world with the growing necessity for the construction industry. Some common applications of TMT bars are Dams, Bridges, High-rise apartments, Flyovers, Concrete re-enforcement structures, Underground Structures, Concrete Roads, and other civil engineering structures. Application of TMT bars differs in the grades.

  • Grade Fe – 415 of TMT bars are used in earthquake-prone areas.
  • Grade Fe – 500 of TMT bars are used in coastal areas
  • Grade Fe – 550 of TMT bars are used in areas with bigger scales of projects.
  • Grade Fe – 600 of TMT bars are used in rough and strong structures.

TMT bars are produced from Fe 500 & Fe 500D IS: 1786 grade billets, with carbon levels maintained much lower than the ISI specification which results in excellent ductility, high bendability, better corrosion resistance and superior weldability. The other undesirable impurities like Sulphur and Phosphorus that impairs the overall longevity of TMT bars are also maintained at a much lower level than ISI specifications.
